The Opportunity for AgriTech Investment in Southeast and South Asia

In recent years, AgriTech investment in the region has undergone a sharp correction, as investors reassess the structural realities of agricultural markets, fragmented value chains, and the challenges of venture scaling across Southeast and South Asia.

Authored by Beanstalk AgTech and Briter, funded by Omnivore, this report covers 12 markets, 150+ funded ventures, $3.1B+ in tracked deals, deep-dives into key value chains and four AgriTech investment verticals, and country-by-country investment profiles.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of South East and South Asia (“SEASA”) economies, contributing materially to GDP and employing a large share of the workforce. Meeting the demands of a growing population and rising household incomes across the region requires increased agricultural productivity, largely driven by innovation in agricultural technology ('AgriTech').

SEASA hosts an active AgriTech innovation ecosystem. However, between 2020 and 2025, AgriTech funding peaked before undergoing a significant correction. Several high-profile AgriTech ventures collapsed amid tightened liquidity and investor caution. These failures highlight systemic constraints facing not just AgriTech, but agriculture and venture capital more broadly — including smallholder fragmentation, shallow liquidity, and policy complexity across the region. These diverse dynamics underscore that venture opportunities across SEASA are more likely to be localised rather than regional in nature.

Despite these challenges, advancements in the regional AgriTech investment ecosystem point to continuing signs of life. Founders and investors are learning from past failures and adapting to the systemic constraints facing SEASA. In the absence of generalist VC activity, corporate VCs have provided critical exit pathways, while non-commercial players have bolstered funding flows and strengthened the regional innovation ecosystem. And investors and startups continue to find success by matching the right value chains with the right markets and business models—driving steady innovation in core verticals.

This report provides a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of the agricultural and AgriTech landscape, opportunities, and challenges across emerging markets in SEASA. It consolidates agricultural fundamentals, the venture capital landscape, and startup activity to identify investable AgriTech themes. Findings are grounded in comprehensive agricultural landscaping and value chain deep dives, supported by primary research through expert interviews covering government, corporates, capital providers, accelerators, academia, startups, and development agencies.
